More
trouble for the APC Presidential Candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari whose
certificate controversy gets messier with the recent confirmation by the
University of Cambridge that one of the subjects listed in General Buhari’s
purported WASC certificate was not offered in its examinations in 1961.
The
confirmation is contained in an e-mail dated Thursday, January 22, 2015 upon
enquiry by one Sodiq Alabi as to whether Hausa language was offered as a
subject in the 1961 examinations. The reply email from the institution’s
Archives Delivery Service Officer, Jacky Emerson to the enquirer read:
“According
to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers, including those for
Hausa, were not included for West African School Certificate.”
The
position of cambridge has been echoed by several top members of the academia
including Prof. A.A Adeyinka whose paper on Curriculum development in Nigeria
suggested that the subject Hausa, was not offered till the late 70’s. Other
issues of the Buhari certificate saga remain whether one could have gained
admission into the NDA with a Fail in Mathematics, and the fact that General Buhari
has not claimed or filed the purported certificate with the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC).
As
to the possibility of verifying the results of the candidate, the institution
however maintained it is an exclusive prerogative of the candidate alone.
“The
University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), now known as
Cambridge Assessment, in response to requests to authenticate a candidate’s
exam certificate, today said: We can only confirm or verify results at the
direct request of or with the permission of a candidate,” read the statement.
“This
is in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 and
section 40 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.” it said on it’s website.
