As Sarah Tetley slept at night, she had no idea her husband, Charles Tetley, was sexually assaulting her.
That is, until she woke up one morning to him doing the unthinkable.
In a new interview, Sarah recounts that horrific time and how she found out she was a victim of marital rape.
“I wake up in the morning — that sort of drowsy just waking up stage —
and realize he was molesting in my sleep,” the 26-year-old told ITV’s This Morning.
After he left for work, she went to a neighbor’s house and told them
what had happened. The neighbor convinced her to phone the police, who
later confirmed he had been sexually abusing her while she slept. They
found evidence in the form of 300 videos on his computer. The footage
showed him raping her, sometimes with household objects.
“I didn’t know what was in them really, but police officers were
telling me they were disgusting. Some of them were quite shocked,” said
the British woman, who believes he must have been drugging her.
‘The officer said they were quite disturbing and that I needed to
come to the station for an examination and drug testing because of the
nature of the assaults and that I appeared to be unconscious in the
videos.’
Sarah viewed 16 of the videos — which were filmed from January 11 to
December 2012 — and learned he had also been using household objects to
molest her.
In March 2014, Charles pleaded guilty to 27 sexual charges including,
rape, attempted rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault and making
indecent images of children. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Sarah has since divorced Charles, with whom she has a four-year-old
daughter. She’s now in a loving relationship with the neighbor who urged
her to get help.
“If in any way you're being abused you should tell someone — even if
it's just mentally — whatever kind of abuse it is,” she said. “And
especially if people are secretive. It might be nothing but it might
also be something quite big.”
