Cissy Houston, Bobbi Kristina’s grandmother and mother of the late Whitney Houston, revealed in a statement to People on Monday, April 20, that her granddaughter has “irreversible brain damage.”
Cissy’s sobering announcement comes just days after Bobbi Kristina’s
father, Bobby Brown, claimed on stage during a concert that his daughter
was “awake”
— Bobby’s lawyer later clarified those remarks, noting that Krissy is
slowly improving but still has a long recovery period ahead of her. She
was recently moved from Emory University Hospital to a long-term care facility in Georgia.
“I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina
in the hospital and while she is no longer in a medically induced coma
she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and
irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive,” Cissy said in her
statement to the mag. “Meeting with the doctors and understanding that
she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me.”
In other words, though the fact that Krissy is now breathing without
the help of a ventilator is an improvement, doctors remain unsure about
what her future quality of life will be, and they’ve clearly prepared
Cissy for the worst.
“We can only trust in God for a miracle at this time. Keep us in your prayers,” Cissy concluded.
